Rationale: "No arts; no letters; no society" (Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan). The human aspect of history cannot always be presented in an accurate manner through the sole use of non-fiction. Thus, literary and visual materials may be of some value.
Course Objective: This course has been designed to give the student a brief introduction to the cinematic and literary uses of antiquity. Special attention will be devoted to ways in which writers and filmmakers adapt historical subjects to suit their aesthetic needs.
Food and Drink: University policy expressly prohibits eating, drinking, and smoking in the classroom. I expect you to comply with this regulation.
Attendance: Because this is a short course, attendance is crucial. Each student will automatically receive 25 points for a perfect attendance record. Conversely, one absence will automatically result in the addition of 00 points. You cannot miss more than one class session and still pass the course.
Tardies: IT IS RUDE AND IMPOLITE TO DISTRACT YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS BY COMING IN LATE. YOU SHOULD SHOW THEM THE SAME COURTESY YOU WOULD EXPECT FOR YOURSELF. Each of you will be granted two (2) grace tardies. After that, for every time you are late, I will deduct five (5) points from your final grade.
Textbooks: The required textbook for this course is William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra. I must insist that you use the New Cambridge edition available in the NMSU-A bookstore.

following bases:

Students with Disabilities: If you have or believe you have a disability, you may wish to self-identify. You can do so by providing documentation to the Counselor for Special Populations, Mr. Jim Payne (Phone: 439-3724). Appropriate accommodations may then be provided for you.
