Computer Classroom Software Request Form
Software installed in the computer classrooms/labs is installed by Computer Services after careful consideration of how the software will interact with other software, the requirements of all instructors using the classroom, and assurance that the software is legally licensed for the university's use.
We attempt to have all software installed prior to the semester starting date. For freeware/shareware software, please notify us of software installation needs at least two months prior to the beginning of the semester in which you will need the software. This allows us sufficient time to download and evaluate the software for adverse affects on other classes or other software already installed.
For purchased software, more time is needed since we should purchase a single copy for evaluation, determine whether or not it is usable, initiate a purchase order, and then install it. This process can take four months or more.
The following software is installed in the three computer classrooms (SC103, SC135 and TE132) and in the Computer Center:
- Windows XP Operating System
- Microsoft Office 2003
- Netscape Navigator 7.2
- SSH Secure Shell
- Internet Explorer 6
- Fire Fox
- Acrobat Reader
- South-Western Keyboarding
- Sophos Virus Scan
- Media Player
- Quick Time
- Flash Plugin
- Real Player
- Paint Shop Pro
The software below is installed only in the designated classroom/lab:
SC 103
- Peach Tree
- QuickBooks Pro
- Corel Draw
The Computer Center, SC 104, has computers set up like each of the various classrooms. The very back row of computers is set up like SC 103, the next row from the back is set up like TE 132, and the rest of the computers in the open lab are set up like SC 135.
Computer Services and Computer Center personnel make every effort to have the software that you need to teach your classes installed and available. On very short notice, sometimes that is not possible. When evaluating/considering use of software in the classroom, please fill out this form so that we may assist you in making a choice that is good for everyone involved. We have experienced software that is incompatible with our network, computers on campus, and/or other software installed on the computers.
We also must ensure that all software used on campus is legally licensed for use on our campus. We have often been asked to install software that someone has purchased without considering that if you want to use it in a class with up to 28 students, that 29 (one for instructor's computer) copies need to be purchased so we do not violate copyright laws.
There is much software available at discounted educational prices, free for educational use, or just plain free (placed into public domain). We can help you determine if the software you are considering falls into one of these categories. If it does not, we may also be able to assist in finding the least expensive vendor to purchase from.
If you have suggestions or comments about the Computer Center or Computer Services, they will be welcomed and appreciated.
