Changing Your Password

You may want to change your computer account password on the Local Area Network (LAN) and the Linux Server sometime during the semester.  The following instructions will be helpful to you:

Changing Your Password on the Local Area Network (LAN)

  1. Click on Start Button
  2. Click on Programs
  3. Click on Change Password
  4. You will get a black DOS box, like the one shown.
  5. Directions in DOS box are as follows: "Enter old password for (your login name)". Here you type your old password and press enter. You will see "Enter new password for (your login name)". Type your new password and press enter. (Note: Your password has to be at least 5 characters long) "Retype new password for (your login name)". Type your new password again and press enter.
  6. The next instructions say "The password for user (your login name) on the network has been changed.
  7. Where the cursor is flashing under the Y press the letter (n) then press the enter key.
  8. Close the black DOS box by using the in the upper right corner of the box.

Your password has been changed and you will need to use your new password the next time you log in to the network.

Changing Your Password on the Linux Server

  1. Ssh into your Linux account on alamo.nmsu.edu.
  2. Type in your login name.
  3. Type in your login password.
  4. Type passwd and press enter.
  5. Type your new password and press enter. (Note: Your password has to be at least 6 characters long starting with a letter and must contain at least one special character, such as a number)
  6. Type your new password again and press enter. Your password has been changed and you will need to use your new password the next time you login to the Linux system.
