Netscape Navigator Tutorial

Navigator Window

1. File

New

This option opens a sub-menu which allows you to open a new Navigator Window, Navigator Tab(tabs allow you to view various sites without opening a new window), Message, Address Book card, Composer Page, or start an Instant Message.

Open Web Location [Ctrl+Shift+L]

Opens a widows that allows you to enter a web location (URL) or specify a file you would like to open.

Open File [Ctrl+O]

Opens a window that allows you to browse for a HTML file.

Close [Ctrl+W]

This option closes the document, but leaves composer running.

Save Page As [Ctrl+S]

This option opens a windows that allows you to browse in order to save an HTML document in a specific file. This allows you to work on a specific HTML document.

Send Page

Will allow you to e-mail your page. You must have an email, aol (for example anyuser@aol.com), internet email (for example anyuser@netscape.net), or newsgroup account setup. If not, a wizard will Pop-up and walk you through the email setup.

Send Link

Will allow you to e-mail a link to the page you are viewing. You must have an email, aol (for example anyuser@aol.com), internet email (for example anyuser@netscape.net), or newsgroup account setup. If not, a wizard will Pop-up and walk you through the email setup.

Edit Page

This function opens the page you are viewing in Netscape Composer in order to edit the page. See Netscape Composer Tutorial

Page Setup

This options opens a window that allows you to adjust margins, headers, footers orientation (i.e. portrait or landscape), and weather or not to print background colors and images.

Print Preview

This option changes the view to closely display the way the document will look if printed. In this view you can print, page setup, change pages, shrink, change from portrait to landscape, or close (this option will take you back to the navigator window).

Print [Ctrl+P]

Opens a window that allow you to set preferences for printing the page.

Print Plus

Opens a Sub-Menu with options to browse Print Central, Printing Supplies, and Printing Services. These web sites contain products and services specifically for printing.

Work Offline

This option allows you to work offline. You will only have access to pages that were previously viewed (in your cache).

Exit [Ctrl+Q]

This option will exit the composer window.

2. Edit

Undo [Ctrl+Z]

Undoes previous action.

Redo[Ctrl+Y]

Re does previous action.

Cut [Ctrl+X]

Highlighted text will be deleted (copied to the clipboard, cut text can be pasted somewhere else in the document).

Copy [Ctrl+C]

Highlighted text will be copied to the clipboard.

Paste [Ctrl+V]

Copied or cut text can be inserted where cursor is placed.

Delete [Del]

Highlighted text will be deleted but not copied to clipboard for later use.

Select All [Ctrl+A]

Selects, i.e. highlights, the entire document for formatting or deleting.

Find on This Page [Ctrl+F]

Opens a window that allows you to looks for text on the page you are viewing.

Find again [Ctrl+G]

Uses previously input text for look-up and replacement.

Fill in Form [Ctrl+K]

If you have previously saved form information (see next step) this option will fill in the form you are viewing.

Save Form Info

After completely filling out a form, this option will allow you to save the information for future use.

Preferences

Allows you to set preferences for Netscape Navigator such as appearance and privacy settings.

3. View

Show/Hide

Contains a sub-menu that allows you to customize Netscape Navigator with toolbars and personal side bars.

Full Screen [F11]

When selected the view changes to full screen with a minimal toolbar.

Stop [Esc]

This option stops a page from loading.

Reload [Ctrl+R]

This option reloads the page you are viewing.

Text Zoom

When highlighted this option opens a sub-menu that allows you to change the size of the text.

Use Style

Allows for basic page style. This function is not generally used.

Character Coding

This option opens a sub-menu which allows for viewing of characters of different languages (i.e. Chinese)

Page Source [Ctrl+U]

This option when selected opens a window and displays the source code of the page (i.e. HTML).

Page Info [Ctrl+I]

This option opens a window that displays the page information.

Apply Theme

This option opens a (window via the internet) which allows you to change the theme (i.e. buttons, background, and colors) of Netscape Navigator.

4. Go

Back [Alt+Left Arrow]

This option changes the browser to the previous page.

Forward [Alt+Right Arrow]

This option changes the browser forward to the page viewed (only available after the back option is chosen).

Home [Alt+Home]

This option takes you to the pre-selected homepage.

History

This option opens a window that allows you to view history of the pages viewed.

Current Page

This option will take you back or forward to pages you have viewed in this session.

5. Bookmarks

Bookmark This Page [Ctrl+D]

Allows you to bookmark the page you are viewing for future use.

File Bookmark [Ctrl+Shift+D]

This option is similar to bookmark except it opens a window which allows you to create a file (for bookmarks) or place a bookmark in a file that has already been created.

Bookmark This Group of Tabs

This option bookmarks the group of tabs (see Navigator Tab above under new section) in the Navigator browser.

Manage Bookmarks [Ctrl+B]

This option opens a window which allows you to manage your bookmarks (i.e. create folders,create separators, and move-rename-delete bookmarks).

Personal Toolbar

Bookmarks placed in this folder are displayed on your browser as a link to a specific page.

Below Separator

All bookmarks below this separator show various files (i.e. Search and Directory, Best of the Web, and Inside Netscape)and or bookmarks (placed here by the user or by Netscape Navigator default)

6. Tools

Search the Web

This option opens the default search engine (Ask Jeeves powered by ASK.COM) in the current window.

Form Manager

This option allows opens a sub-menu which allows you to Fill in Form (in order to save time when filling out forms with specific field values such as Name, Phone etc.), Save Form info, Edit Form info, and Manage Site.

Cookie Manager

This option opens a sub-menu which allows you to Block, Unblock, and Manage Cookies.

Search

This option when selected opens a sub-menu which allows you to Search the Web, Search Messages, Search Addresses, Yellow Pages, Stock Quotes, Maps and Directions People Finder, Reference Desk, Shopping Search, and Internet Keywords.

Password Manager

When selected, this option opens a sub-menu which allows you to Log Out (of Password Manager), or Manage Stored Passwords (a time saving utility for logging into various web sites without having to type a password when prompted).

Download Manager

This option opens a window which allows you to view/manage your downloads (i.e. .html, .doc, .exe, and .gif files).

Web Development

This option when selected opens a sub-menu to operate Java Consoles, and Java Script Consoles.

7. Window

This drop down menu allows you to open windows such as Navigator (Ctrl+1), Mail and Newsgroups (Ctrl+2), Instant Messenger (Ctrl+3), Composer (Ctrl+4), and Address Book (Ctrl+5). If multiple windows are open this option allows you to toggle between them.

8. Help

Probably the most useful part of the Composer is the help menu. Under the Help and Support Center option (F1) you have indexed help and a help menu sorted by topics. This menu also allows you to view What's New in Netscape as well as register and send feedback.
