Academic Support Center
The Academic Support Center promotes independence in learning through one-on-one and group tutoring. It also supports and reinforces instructors’ classroom teaching. Ten computer workstations, a StarBoard and a projector are available for student and/or faculty use.

Just North of the Science Center (campus map).

- Monday - Thursday: 9 AM to 7 PM
- Friday - Saturday: 10 AM to 2 PM
- Sunday: CLOSED
Writing Assistance
We offer Drop-In Tutoring, Compass Placement Testing, Reference Materials (APA/MLA), as well as Reading Tutorial (CCDS 109N) and Writing Tutorial (CCDS 113N) courses for credit.
Writing center tutors work with students in groups and on a one-on-one basis in writing across the curriculum. Most student papers are written for academic purposes; however, the tutors in the writing center assist students throughout the writing process with all types of writing.
Students are encouraged to submit papers to OWL when they do not have time to get to the writing center. Papers are reviewed by a writing center tutor with comments and suggestions to help students improve their papers.
Math & Science Tutoring
We offer drop-in tutoring for the following: Math (CCDM 100/103/114 through beginning Calculus), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Accounting.
We also have available: Telephone Tutoring, Reference Books, Computers, Web Self-Study Course for CCDM 100/103, and DVD/Video Tapes (for CCDM 103/114, Math 115, Math 180, Math 185, Math 210, Calculus, Study Skills, Math Anxiety).
History
The Academic Support Center was born in the Summer of 2007 with the opening of a new building on campus. This new building, built with Title V funds, houses what was the separated Jimmy L. Smith Math & Science Learning Center and the Mary Virginia Brown Writing Center.
In 1995 Roger Haley renamed the NMSU-A Writing Center to the Mary Virginia Brown Writing Center to honor Mary Virginia Brown’s ten years of service (1985 - 1995) to the writing center. Born in China to missionary parents, Brown grew up in Oklahoma. She and her husband George taught in the Alamogordo and Guam. Brown also wrote the coming-of-age story “Thirteenth Summer,” concerning a thirteen-year-old girl during the Oklahoma dust bowl days.
