Information for New Students

Attending college can be a daunting task whether you are a first-time student or a student returning to college after a break. Here are the basic steps you will need to follow to attend NMSU-A:

  1. Apply for admission at the Admissions & Records Office. Order high school, GED, and/or college transcripts using the request forms. (You must be degree seeking to receive Financial Aid, VA Assistance, or other state and federal assistance programs.) If you have personal copies of transcripts from previous colleges or universities, please bring them with you when you see an advisor. These will help us to assist you with course selection.
  2. If you wish to receive financial aid, visit the Financial Aid Office.
  3. Take the Placement Tests for math, English, and reading in the Testing Center (in the Classroom Building, Room 602) if you have not taken math or English at a previous college. The tests are free and are given year-round. The placement test schedule is printed in the Schedule of Classes and is also available at the Counseling, Advising and Career Services desk in the Student Services Building.
  4. Attend a New Student Orientation (dates and location to be announced) which is offered before the start of every spring and fall semester.
  5. See an advisor if you have questions about degree plans, scheduling classes, prerequisites, placement testing, or starting college. All new students (attending for the first time at New Mexico State University) and all Freshman, and students admitted or readmitted on probation will need to have the new student registration hold removed before they can register for classes. You must meet with an academic advisor prior to registration!
