The mission of New Mexico State University at Alamogordo is to provide quality learning opportunities for individuals in the diverse communities we serve.

Course Description
This course is designed for the beginning or intermediate volleyball player. It will deal with actual volleyball skills for increasing general physical strength, agility, coordination control and fitness. The bulk of the course will consist of active participation and class lectures. No textbook will be needed for this course.

Course Outline
Each class meeting the student will:

  1. Warm-Up (Stretching
  2. Skills Demonstration
  3. Drills
  4. Game Play
Student Learning Outcomes
This course is aimed to help each student:
  • Identify selected skills, rules, strategies, and terminology in volleyball.
  • Increase strength, flexibility, coordination and cardiovascular endurance through participation in volleyball.
  • Complete a self evaluation of his/her physical fitness and progress through a skill test.
  • Have knowledge of appropriate safety measures in volleyball and will apply these safety practices in actual performances.
  • Demonstrate responsibility by seeing that equipment used by the team is properly stored at the end of each daily practice.
  • Recognize, analyze and correct technique errors as presented in drills.
  • Demonstrate self control by maintaining composure in competitive play.
Course Requirement
  • It is essential that attire suitable for participation in volleyball activities be worn. (T-shirt, Shorts, Volleyball Shoes, Sweats, etc.). 
  • No food or drinks are allowed in the gym other than water bottles.
  • Lockers & Showers are available for student use.
  • Children should not be present during physical education classes.  The university policy prohibits children from accompanying parents who are taking physical education classes.
  • Only the NMSU-A students who are enrolled in physical education classes will be allowed to attend and participate in classroom instuction.
Attendance & Extenuating Circumstance
This is a participation activity class and attendance and punctuality are required and will affect your grade accordingly.   You are expected to attend all classes.  In case of an emergency, an excused absence will require contact with the instructor within 48 hours and the excused absences will be determined on a case by case basis. Only two excused make-up days will be required to attend another physical fitness class given by the same instructor to make up for the excused absence and no points will be deducted for excused absences.  Twenty points will be deducted for unexcused absences and ten points for tardies.

Late or Missed Assignment & Plagiarism
A late or missed assignment (written exam, skills test) will receive a grade of zero unless the absence is excused and a make-up date is rescheduled with the instructor.

It is unethical and against University policy to turn in another's work as your own or to not cite references in papers, projects, or presentation.  This is called plagiarism.  If your are caught plagiarizing you will be given a zero on the project or assignment in question.  At the instructors discretion additonal disciplinary action will be taken.

Grade Criteria
Each student will start each grading period with 400 points. The particpation grade will be recorded on the minus basis for each class. At the end of the grading period, the total number of points will be averaged together to determine the letter grade for that semester. 

Skills Test
The student will have a skills tested on the following skills:

  • passing
  • setting
  • Spiking
  • Serving
Written Examination
Knowledge obtained through class lectures, notes and handouts. Cheating will not be tolerated. Cheating on a test will result in a grade of zero.
